The Hunt’s are crushing it, but how did they even come into owning an NFL Franchise? The Story of the Kansas City Chiefs Ownership Family

Today, we want to share with you the inspiring story of the Hunt family, the owners of the Kansas City Chiefs. From humble beginnings to the pinnacle of success, their journey is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the American dream.

The Hunt family's journey began with the patriarch, Lamar Hunt, who made his fortune in the oil and gas industry. In the 1950s, he founded the American Football League (AFL), which eventually merged with the National Football League (NFL) to become the most popular professional sports league in the United States.

Lamar Hunt's love for football led him to pursue his dream of owning a professional football team. In 1960, he and seven other businessmen formed the AFL, and Hunt became the owner of the Dallas Texans. However, after three years, he moved the team to Kansas City and renamed them the Chiefs.

The team's fortunes turned around in the 1960s, winning three AFL championships and one Super Bowl. The Hunt family continued to invest in the team, and they won their second Super Bowl in 2020.

According to Forbes, the Kansas City Chiefs are currently worth $3.3 billion, making them one of the most valuable franchises in the NFL. However, the team was not always worth this much. In 1960, Lamar Hunt purchased the Dallas Texans for $25,000, which would be around $217,000 in today's dollars. When he moved the team to Kansas City and renamed them the Chiefs, he sold a portion of the team to investors to raise capital (Fun Fact: The name "Chiefs" was chosen to honor Mayor Harold Bartle, who was instrumental in bringing the team to Kansas City). By 2006, the Hunt family had bought back all the shares and became the sole owners of the team.
