The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) is one of the premier women's professional golf tours in the world. Founded in 1950, the LPGA has a rich history of events that have seen some of the greatest female golfers of all time compete against each other for the coveted championship titles.
The LPGA hosts a series of events throughout the year, with the biggest being the major tournaments. These include the ANA Inspiration, the U.S. Women's Open, the Women's British Open, and the Evian Championship. Each of these tournaments offers a significant purse, with the total prize money for the entire LPGA Tour in 2021 amounting to over $70 million. The winners of each of the majors take home a significant portion of that purse, with the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open offering a $5.5 million purse, while the ANA Inspiration offers $3 million.
Over the years, the LPGA has seen some of the most dominant female golfers in history. Players such as Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, and Lorena Ochoa have all won numerous tournaments and multiple majors. Today, the LPGA boasts a new crop of talented golfers, including the likes of Nelly Korda, Jin Young Ko, and Inbee Park.
In addition to the players, the LPGA has also seen some important figures in its history. One of the most important figures in the LPGA's history is the founder, Betty Jameson. Jameson was a professional golfer in the 1940s and 1950s and played a pivotal role in the formation of the LPGA. Another important figure is Nancy Lopez, who won 48 LPGA Tour events and is considered one of the greatest female golfers of all time.
As the LPGA continues to grow and evolve, we can expect to see more talented golfers emerge and the competition become even fiercer. With the 2023 season underway, it promises to be another exciting year for women's golf.
What Happens Throughout The Year?
The number of LPGA events held each year can vary, but typically, there are between 25 and 30 events on the LPGA Tour schedule. In 2021, there were a total of 34 official events, including 5 major championships.
The purse for each LPGA event can also vary, with the larger events offering more prize money. The total purse for an LPGA event is divided among the players who make the cut, with the winner receiving the largest portion. In 2021, the purse for LPGA events ranged from $1.3 million to $5.5 million, with the largest purse being offered at the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open. The average purse for an LPGA event in 2021 was approximately $2.05 million. It's worth noting that the LPGA also offers a bonus pool, known as the CME Globe, which awards a $1.5 million bonus to the player who accumulates the most points throughout the season.
Who Has Made The Bag?
The LPGA golfer who has made the most money in career earnings is Annika Sorenstam from Sweden. According to the LPGA website, Sorenstam has accumulated a total of $22,573,192 in career earnings on the LPGA Tour. She won 72 LPGA Tour events, including 10 major championships, during her career and is widely regarded as one of the greatest female golfers of all time. Sorenstam retired from professional golf in 2008, but her legacy and impact on the sport continue to inspire and influence new generations of golfers.
