OBJ $12M Contract, March Madness Biz & NIL Deals

Friends,

Welcome back to the Sports Biz Network, the newsletter that will make you sound smarter in the first 5 minutes of every meeting. Today we're covering OBJ and his potential $12M deal (Whaaa), some biz around March Madness and more NIL deals coming through. Let's get into it!

OBJ Could Make Bank

For those of you who remember, in 2021 OBJ decided to take his contract payment in Bitcoin. His base salary was $750k and was paid in the digital currency. At the time Bitcoin was valued at approx $64,000. Bitcoin has since declined in value (approximately $27,000), but here's where things may get interesting…

There are a lot of people speculating that with the recent bank issues (and more to come), that bitcoin value is going to skyrocket. One of those people is Balaji. He believes that Bitcoin will go to $1M / Bitcoin in the next 90 days. He believes so much in it, he has bet $2M that it will do so. If you don't know Balaji, he:

  • Sold his genetic testing company for $300M+

  • Former CTO of Coinbase

  • Has been known to predict things like: How COVID-19 would play and how digital and real identities would become a trend.

Other prominent figures in Crypto weigh in:

Is this a lot of speculation? Yes.

Could it happen? Why not.

If it does…

OBJ Could Cash In

If Bitcoin does reach $1M in the next 90 days that means if OBJ held on to his 2021 contract of $750k (in Bitcoin), it would be worth $12M for the 1 year deal!

OBJ care to chime in if you still have it?

Around The Web: 4 Things

1/ FDU upset Purdue and none of you knew that was going to happen especially if you looked at the difference in schools basketball operating expenses. FDU operating expenses last year was $166k and Purdue’s was $2.3M ….. March Madness is a beautiful thing sometimes…

2/ FDU Better Pays Out Nearly $500k -The Action Network reported that the biggest upset of all time, with the point spread considered, and one better who put down $33,000 on FDU and walked away with $528,000!

3/ Host of the Final Four can generate hundreds of millions - Unlike the Olympics, the Final Four can actually help generate millions of dollars for the local community. It was reported that recent Final Four hosts generated $300M+

4/ College Coaches can be big business

While players can financially benefit from Name, Image and Likeness Agreements, coaches are the really high earners. In 43 of America’s 50 states, college coaches — either football and basketball — are the highest-paid public employees in the state, according to data compiled by the Online Betting Guide.

Bill Self (Kansas) and John Calipari (Kentucky), both participants in this year’s tournaments, are the highest-paid public employees in their states.

NIL: Top 3

(USA TODAY Sports)

1/ $25k deal for Duke Walk-on - How many Walk-On’s have received NIL deals? While there’s no real data on this yet, we believe every college athlete has the capability to generate money on their NIL especially at a school like Duke.

2/ Upside Down Headband for NIL Deal. Can a simple flip can get enough attention to get people to buy something. This athlete thinks so.

3/ Wichita Bball Hooper returning and make announcement with a NIL deal. This is a huge part of NIL that most people aren’t talking about. The ability for athletes to stay in college longer because they can actually make money now and don’t “have” to turn pro.
